# Connect your app to BambooHR

> Connect your app to BambooHR, HR software for employee records and time off, to build directories, time off views, and HR reports in your Lovable app.

[BambooHR](https://www.bamboohr.com/) is HR software for employee records, the company directory, time off, and reports. The BambooHR connector lets your Lovable app read and update your company's HR data through a shared connection. It's designed for internal tools such as directories, out-of-office boards, and headcount dashboards built on data your team already keeps in BambooHR.

BambooHR is available as an [app + chat connector](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/app-connectors.md): one shared connection that works in the project chat while you build and in your published apps.

With BambooHR, your app can:

* Read the employee directory and run custom reports with the fields you choose
* Look up individual employee records and update their fields
* Show who is out of office and read time off requests and time off types

## Common use cases and example apps

These examples show what you can build with BambooHR, each with a prompt to start from.

| Example app | Example prompt | Description |
| :- | :- | :- |
| **Employee directory** | *Use BambooHR and build an employee directory with search by name, job title, and department.* | **Give everyone one place to find colleagues.** The app reads the BambooHR directory and lets people filter by team and role. |
| **Who's out this week** | *Use BambooHR and build a dashboard that shows who is out of office this week.* | **See team availability at a glance.** The app reads time off from BambooHR and shows each absence on a weekly calendar. |
| **Headcount by department** | *Use BambooHR and build a dashboard that charts headcount by department and location.* | **Track team size without exporting spreadsheets.** The app runs a custom BambooHR report and groups employees by department and location. |
| **Work anniversaries feed** | *Use BambooHR and build a page that lists upcoming work anniversaries this month.* | **Celebrate milestones on time.** The app reads hire dates from a custom report and lists the anniversaries coming up. |
| **Time off request tracker** | *Use BambooHR and build a page that lists this month's time off requests with their status.* | **Keep managers on top of pending requests.** The app reads time off requests for a date range and highlights the ones still waiting for approval. |
| **Profile updater** | *Use BambooHR and build an admin tool to update an employee's job title and department.* | **Keep employee records current from your own tool.** The app looks up an employee and saves field changes back to BambooHR. |

> [!TIP]
>
> BambooHR limits how many requests your company can make in a period. For dashboards and scheduled jobs, ask Lovable to cache the BambooHR data and refresh it only as often as the feature needs.

## How to connect BambooHR

Who can create BambooHR connections depends on your plan and workspace settings. App + chat connectors are available by default on Free, Pro, and Business plans. On Enterprise plans, they are effectively disabled at first: [Who can create connections and clients](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/admin-controls.md#who-can-create-connections-and-clients) defaults to **No one** until an admin changes it in **Connectors → Admin settings → App + chat connectors**.

You can create multiple BambooHR connections using different API keys, which is useful for separating a test company from your production company.

When the connection is created, you can [link it to the projects](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/app-connectors.md#link-a-connection-to-a-project) where you want to use it. Anyone building in a project can ask Lovable in the project chat to link their project to it.

### Prerequisites

Before connecting BambooHR, make sure you have:

* A BambooHR account with access to the BambooHR API
* Your BambooHR company subdomain, the `acme` part of `https://acme.bamboohr.com`
* A BambooHR API key
* Permission to **create connections** in your Lovable workspace (see [Who can create connections and clients](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/admin-controls.md#who-can-create-connections-and-clients))

> [!NOTE]
>
> A BambooHR API key has the same access as the BambooHR user who creates it. Your app can read and change only the employees and fields that user can, so create the key with a user whose permissions match what the app needs.

### Step 1: Get a BambooHR API key

A BambooHR API key lets your Lovable app authenticate with the BambooHR API for your company.

To create a BambooHR API key:

**1. Open BambooHR**

Sign in to BambooHR at your company address, for example `https://acme.bamboohr.com`. The subdomain in that address is the **Company subdomain** you enter in Lovable.

**2. Open API keys**

Click your name in the lower left corner to open the user menu, then select **API Keys**. If you don't see **API Keys**, your BambooHR access level does not allow API keys. Ask a BambooHR administrator to change it.

**3. Create a key**

Click **Add New Key**, enter a name for the key, for example `Lovable integration`, and click **Generate Key**.

**4. Copy the key**

Copy the key and store it securely. BambooHR shows the key only once.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Your API key functions like a password. Keep it secure and never share it publicly. You'll need it in the next step.

See BambooHR documentation for more: [Getting started with the BambooHR API](https://documentation.bamboohr.com/docs/getting-started).

### Step 2: Connect BambooHR to Lovable

Enter your company subdomain and API key in Lovable to create the connection.

**1. Open BambooHR in Connectors**

Open [**Connectors**](https://lovable.dev/dashboard?connectors) and select **BambooHR**. For the other places to open the catalog from, see [Where to find connectors](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/introduction#where-to-find-connectors).

**2. Add a connection**

Click **Add connection** and select **App + chat connector**. The form is split into collapsible sections, **Details**, **Configure connection**, and **Sharing**.

**3. Name the connection**

Under **Details**, Lovable fills in a name for the connection, which you can change. The name is only used inside Lovable to identify the connection.

**4. Configure the connection**

Under **Configure connection**, enter:

1. **Company subdomain**: only the subdomain of your BambooHR address, for example `acme` for `https://acme.bamboohr.com`.
2. **API key**: paste the BambooHR API key from Step 1.

**5. Choose who can use this connection**

Under **Sharing**, the connection is private to you by default and shows a **Private** label. To share it, click **Share with others**. Then add workspace members by email, or click **Invite entire workspace** to make the connection available to everyone in your Lovable workspace.

See [Who can use connections and clients](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/admin-controls.md#who-can-use-connections-and-clients) for more information.

**6. Connect**

Click **Connect**. Lovable verifies the API key against the BambooHR API before saving the connection.

When connected, anyone building in a project can ask Lovable in the project chat to link their project to BambooHR (based on configured connection-level access). Your Lovable apps can then read and update employee records and time off through BambooHR.

## Limitations

The BambooHR connector cannot:

* Support per-end-user BambooHR login. Each connection represents a single BambooHR API key shared across all projects linked to it.

If a request fails because the API key was revoked or its BambooHR user was deactivated, create a new key and update the Lovable connection.

## Manage your BambooHR connection

Connections are managed from [**Connectors**](https://lovable.dev/dashboard?connectors): select **BambooHR**, then open the connection.

* **Unlink projects** to remove BambooHR access from specific projects while keeping the connection available for others. See [Unlink projects from a connection](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/app-connectors.md#unlink-projects-from-a-connection) for the steps.
* **Delete the connection** to remove it from the workspace entirely. Deleting is permanent. It removes the credentials from all linked projects, and app features that use BambooHR stop working until a new connection is added. See [Delete a connection](https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/app-connectors.md#delete-a-connection) for the steps and who can delete.
