Lovable is rolling out project and website import gradually. If Import project to Lovable is not in the dashboard + menu, your account does not have it yet.
You can start a project from a website you already have. Paste its URL, and Lovable rebuilds the page as a project you can edit. Lovable imports one page per request, up to 10 pages of one site per project. See Add more pages. The text, images, fonts, colors, and layout that visitors see become parts of the project you can change in the project chat and publish on Lovable. Use it to move a site you own off a website builder, or to redesign an existing site without starting from a blank prompt. Website import is available on all plans to anyone who can create projects in the workspace. An import is treated as standard build usage and consumes credits. Reading the page is a small part of the work: most of the cost is Lovable building and checking the project. See Build costs.

What Lovable reads from a website

Lovable opens the page the way a visitor would, without signing in, and reads what is on screen. Nothing on your site changes. Lovable reads:
  • the text
  • the images and fonts the page loads
  • the colors and spacing, in the light color scheme and in any dark mode the site defines
  • the layout at desktop width, and how the page’s styles change at phone and tablet widths
  • the page title that shows in the browser tab
Lovable rebuilds the page in a new project with its fonts, images, colors, and spacing, and saves a screenshot of the original to compare against. Lovable reads only what visitors can see. It does not import logins, databases, or anything else that ran on the original site’s server. A page behind a login is imported as what a visitor who is not signed in sees, usually the login page itself. A form keeps its look, but not what the original site did with the submissions, such as emailing them to you. After the page is in your project, ask Lovable to rebuild that part and add anything else you need, for example a contact form that stores submissions in Lovable Cloud:

Import a website

Import only a website you own or have the owner’s permission to copy. The import reproduces the page’s text, images, and design, and you are responsible for having the right to use them. Importing a client’s site you are rebuilding for them is the intended use.
Start the import from the dashboard:

Open the import dialog

On the dashboard, click the + button in the prompt input and select Import project to Lovable.

Under Code & web, select Website.

Paste the URL

Enter the full address of the page in Website URL, including https://, for example https://www.yourdomain.com. The page must be public: an address on your own computer or network cannot be imported.

Start the import

Click Import website. Lovable creates the project, opens the editor, and starts the import on its own in the project chat. Lovable reads the page and builds the project, then compares the result with the original.
The import is complete when the preview shows your page. Compare it with the original, ask Lovable to fix any differences you see, then keep building.

Add more pages

Each project imports pages from one site, up to 10 pages, and each request adds one page. Import the home page first, because the first page you import becomes the project’s home page. Each page you add keeps the path it has on the original site, for example /about. To add a page, give Lovable its URL in the project chat:
When the new page’s header, footer, and navigation are identical to the first page’s, Lovable reuses them, so the pages share one design. If you have edited the imported pages, Lovable adds the new page with its own copies of them and keeps your edits. Asking Lovable to import a page again replaces it, as long as you have not edited the imported pages. After you edit them, Lovable refuses to import a page again and changes nothing. Ask for changes in the chat instead. Pages from a different website cannot be added to the same project, and a subdomain such as blog.yourdomain.com counts as a different website. Start a new import for a second site.

Check the result against the original

During the import, Lovable compares a screenshot of the rebuilt page with the screenshot it took of the original. You can ask for the comparison at any time, for example after a round of edits. Lovable tells you which part of the page differs most: the top, the middle, or the bottom.
Small differences are expected. Lovable rebuilds the design with its own components rather than copying the original code, so spacing, animations, and content that loads as you scroll can differ. Ask for the specific part you want changed.

Publish the site on your domain

When the site is the way you want it, publish it and connect your domain to the project. Visitors reach the Lovable version when the domain points at Lovable. Until then, visitors see your original site.

Limitations

Website import has these limits:
  • Addresses on a private network or your own computer cannot be imported. A page behind a login is imported as the page a signed-out visitor sees.
  • The layout is read at desktop width, so the page can look different on a phone or a tablet, and in dark mode. Check the preview on a phone and in dark mode, and ask Lovable to fix what differs.
  • A site is capped at 10 imported pages per project.
  • A page keeps its path only when the path has plain lowercase letters, digits, hyphens, and underscores. A path with capital letters, accented letters, or a dot, such as /About.html, gets a different address in the project, so update links that use the original one.
  • Lovable copies the page title, but not the description that search engines show under it.
  • Very large pages cannot be imported. Lovable skips any single stylesheet (a file that defines the page’s look) over 1.5 MB. The import stops when the page’s HTML (its content and structure) is over 5 MB, or when the remaining stylesheets together are over 5 MB.
  • Images, fonts, and videos over 10 MB are left out. Lovable imports at most 300 of them and at most 30 MB in total. Images in SVG format that the page loads as separate files, such as logos and icons, are not copied.
  • Your account can read at most 30 pages per hour. Every read counts, including each comparison with the original, which takes a new screenshot of the rebuilt page.
  • Downloadable documents on the page, such as PDFs, are not copied into the project. Upload them again in the project if you need them.

Troubleshooting

These are the points where people most often stop. The first line of each answer says whether the behavior is intended.
Intended. The address has to start with https:// or http://. Add it in front of the domain and try again.
Not intended. The address could not be used, or the import could not start. Check that the address is public: open it in a private browser window and confirm the page loads. If it loads and the import still does not start, check that you can create projects in the workspace, then try again.
Intended. Each project imports pages from one site, so Lovable refuses a page from another domain and changes nothing in the project. Start a new import from the dashboard for the second site. Pages of the same site are added as described in Add more pages.
Intended. A project imports at most 10 pages of a site, so Lovable refuses the next one and changes nothing in the project. For more pages of the site, start a new import from the dashboard in a second project.
Not intended. Lovable could not read the page, and nothing was added to the project. The most common cause is temporary: Lovable had no browser free to read the page, so ask Lovable to import the page again in a few minutes, with the same prompt as in Add more pages.If Lovable says the page is too large, or that your account reached its website-import limit, the page is over the sizes in Limitations or you have used the hour’s 30 reads. Reading also stops after 2 minutes on a page that never finishes loading.
Intended, within limits. Lovable rebuilds the page from the layout it read at desktop width, so content that appears on scroll, an animation, or how the page looks at another screen width can differ. Ask Lovable to compare the page with the original and fix the differences, naming the part you care about most. See Check the result against the original.

FAQ

Yes, as long as the page is public. Lovable reads the published page, not the website builder behind it, so the result is the page as visitors see it. The builder’s editing tools, plugins, store, and member areas are not copied.Import each page you want to keep, then ask Lovable to rebuild the features you need. Only what is on the imported page. The articles or products listed on the page are copied as text and images on that page, not as records you can manage. To keep publishing new posts or products, ask Lovable to build a database for them after the import.
No. The import is a copy of the page at the moment Lovable read it. Later changes on the original site do not reach your project, and changes you make in Lovable do not affect the original.
